New Beginnings Academy
April 2007

From the Director’s Desk
Dr. Wayne R. Millette

The Open Enrollment period ended on March 23, 2007. We had a number of new and returning families express interest in enrolling their children at New Beginnings Academy. We currently have 2 spaces available in the K/1 section, 8 spaces open in 2/3 and no spaces for 4/5. Therefore, we will not need to hold a lottery. We are indeed very excited about our enrollment outlook for the 2007-2008 school year. Our spring marketing campaign started last week and will run through early May. Post cards were sent out last week to families with school age children in the surrounding areas. Brochures will be sent home with current students in the near future. We have scheduled an open house for April 19, 6:30 to 7:30pm. Interested parents can still submit an application for the 2007-2008 school year. All applications will now be handled on a first-come first-serve basis. Please advise anyone you know who are interested in New Beginnings Academy to get an application and fill it out as soon as possible. They can get an application in the main office. They can also call and request that one be mailed to them.

Thank you for your efforts in helping to recruit new students to attend our school.

March was reading month. The month’s reading activities cumulated in a special morning assembly on Friday March 30, where all the children who participated in the reading program any time during the year received a special reading buddy (stuffed animal) to take home. The children were very excited and proud of their great reading accomplishment. We highly encourage you to continue promoting reading at home.

Science Olympiad

Practice for the Science Olympiad team started this past week. New Beginnings Academy will be represented at the May 5th event in Ann Arbor with a total of four teams. The teams are Puff Mobile, Boatmania, Straw Tower, and Barge Building. We are very excited to have our students participate in this exciting and enriching program.

Science Fair

Save The Date! The science fair is scheduled for Thursday, May 3 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. This is an exciting and fun event for all.

Scholastic Book Fair

After-School Program

The last segment of the after school program will start up again the week of April 16th. The program includes piano, dance, karate, soccer, and computers. Please see Mr. Greene for more information.

Virtue of the Month – Honesty

Each month we focus on a different virtue. For April, the virtue is honesty. Teachers do special activities focusing on this virtue, and we recognize students who are demonstrating this virtue in a special way. Please help us in promoting this activity by reminding your children of the importance of character development

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25. Please make an appointment to see your child’s teacher. Your participation in your child’s education is extremely important.

ATTENDANCE AWARDS

Awards will be given each month to students who have perfect attendance. To earn such an award, the student must:

* Not miss any school for any reason that month (not even a half day).

* Not be tardy more than three (3) times for the entire trimester. If a student is tardy more than three times in one trimester, he/she cannot earn a perfect attendance award for any month in that trimester.
