New Beginnings Academy
December 2006

FROM THE DIRECTOR

On Tuesday November 7, student council elections were held at school.  Please join me in congratulating the following students who won a seat on the 2006-2007 New Beginnings Academy Student Council. The winners are Aidan Reid, Dillon Carrington, Arius Richmond, Aziah Whitfield, Darron Wheeler, Joselyn Carter, Jadah Anderson, Michael Freeman, Shelby Finley, London Carrington, O’livia Anderson-Williams and Tyler Morris.

We recently received results of the Spring 2006 Performance Series Exam.  As a school, the results indicate we continue to show growth in math, reading, and writing in all grades tested.  Students in grade 3 to 5 were tested in the Spring of 2006.  If you are interested in receiving your child’s specific results, please make a request in the main office.

The holiday season is almost upon us.  New Beginnings Academy will close at the end of school on Friday December 22 and re-open on Monday January 8, 2007.  Hope everyone has a safe, joyous, and prosperous holiday season.

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH – UNDERSTANDING

Each month we focus on a different virtue. For December, the virtue is understanding. Teachers do special activities focusing on this virtue, and we recognize students who are demonstrating this virtue in a special way. Please help us in promoting this activity by reminding your children of the importance of character development.

LUNCHTIME

Lunchtime for all students is 11:30-12:00 daily.  Parents and grandparents are welcome to visit and share lunch with your child.

WINTER FESTIVAL

An evening of music is coming your way Monday, December 18!  Please see the attached information about your child’s music concert and directions to WCC Morris Lawrence Building.

SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS

Should it be necessary to cancel school due to inclement weather or power outages, it will be announced on the following stations:

            WJR RADIO (760 AM)

            FOX TV (CHANNEL 2)

If we have to cancel school after the students arrive, we will attempt to contact parents by phone as well as announcing it over the radio and TV. So, please keep your child’s emergency information card up-to-date with proper

Phone numbers.  After-school classes will only operate when students are in school.  On days when there is no school because of Staff Training or weather, there will be no after-school classes.

Is your child too sick to attend school?

For the welfare of the students and staff at New Beginnings Academy, please do not send your child to school if she/he is ill. However, if a student becomes ill during the school day he/she should notify the teacher. Appropriate arrangements will be made with the office for the student’s care and/or parent pickup.

Please use the following as a starting point when making the decision of whether or not to send your child to school:

  • Has a fever of 100 degrees or more, and should remain home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal;
  • Has vomited or has diarrhea, and should remain at home for 24 hours after it has stopped;
  • Has a persistent cough;
  • Has any rash;
  • Has open or draining skin sores;
  • Has inflamed or draining eyes or ears;

If your child is ill, please call the school to report the illness.  Thank you for keeping our school healthy.

ATTENDANCE AWARDS

Awards will be given each month to students who have perfect attendance. To earn such an award, the student must:

  • Not miss any school for any reason that month (not even a half day).

  • Not be tardy more than three (3) times for the entire trimester. If a student is tardy more than three times in one trimester, he/she cannot earn a perfect attendance award for any month in that trimester.
