New Beginnings Academy
January 11, 2007

FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dr. Wayne Millette

Happy New Year!!  It will indeed be a great year at New Beginnings Academy in 2007.  I hope that 2007 brings all that you hope for.

I am very pleased to announce that Mr. Attiq Khan has joined the staff as our new 4/5 Teacher Assistant.  He replaces Mrs. Saina Sajjadi who resigned her position in December to devote more time to completing her teaching degree at Eastern Michigan University.  I am also pleased to announce that KC Childcare Center will be providing latchkey services to New Beginnings Academy.  KC takes over for Surround Care after Mrs. Gail Burwell retired in December.  Mrs. Burwell has been with New Beginnings Academy since 1999.  We wish her all the best in her transition.

Once again Open Enrollment is upon us.  This is the time when parents submit an application to enroll their children and be assured a spot in our school for the 2007-2008 academic year.  If there are more applications during Open Enrollment than spaces available at any particular grade level-- students will be eligible to be part of a lottery for that particular grade level.  Anyone applying after March 23 will not be a part of the lottery and will be placed on a first come first serve basis.

It is very important for parents who are interested in our school to submit an application during the Open Enrollment period.  If you know of anyone who is interested in attending New Beginnings Academy, it will be greatly appreciated if you have them contact the office or visit our website at www.newbeginningsacademy.org.  They can apply directly on line or stop by the school to pick up an application.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in marketing New Beginnings Academy to new and prospective families.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held Thursday, February 1, 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. and Friday February 2, 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.  Please see your child’s teacher to make an appointment.  We had 83% of our students represented at conferences in the fall and that was good.  It would be great to get 100% of the students represented.

RE-ENROLLMENT FOR 2007-2008

Re-enrollment forms for the 2007-2008 school year will go out to parents on January 12.  Parents will have until Friday, February 9, to return the form to the office. If the form is not turned in by the deadline then you will have to re-apply.

WINTER FESTIVAL

The Winter Festival was a great success!  The children performed and behaved very well.  The auditorium at Washtenaw Community College was filled with parents, extended family members, and friends (85% of the students were represented by at least one parent).  Overall, it was a great community event. The students had a great time preparing and performing at the event.  They greatly appreciated being able to perform in both English and Spanish.  Thank you for attending and please continue to participate in future school activities.

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT

The Kindergarten and First grade team will be sponsoring an all school family movie night on Friday, January 26, 2007 (Akeelah and the Bee).  The movie is Free and open to all students.  Popcorn and other small snacks will be available as a fund raiser for the team…Ta Ta.  Please mark your calendar.

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH – PEACEFULNESS

Each month we focus on a different virtue.  For January, the virtue is peacefulness.  Teachers do special activities focusing on this virtue, and we recognize students who are demonstrating this virtue in a special way.  Please help us in promoting this activity by reminding your children of the importance of character development.

SCHOOL CANCELLATIONS

Michigan weather and other factors in Michigan are unpredictable.  There is sometimes the need to cancel school because of dangerous weather conditions, power outages, or other reasons.  If we do have to cancel school because of weather, or any other reason, it will be announced on the following stations:

WJR RADIO (760 AM)

FOX TV (CHANNEL 2)

The announcement will be for NEW BEGINNINGS ACADEMY.

If we have to cancel school after the students arrive, we will attempt to contact the parents by phone as well as announcing it over the radio and TV.  That is why it is important to keep your child’s emergency information card up to date with phone numbers.

If you have any questions about this procedure, please contact Dr. Millette.
