New Beginnings Academy
March 2007

From the Director’s Desk
Dr. Wayne Millette

March is Reading Month!

Many classroom teachers have special activities highlighting the importance and joy of reading. Our school-wide reading program will continue well into the month of May. Students who have been actively participating in the reading program will be rewarded this month with reading buddies. Please encourage your child to read for at lease fifteen to thirty minutes daily. Fourth and fifth graders are encouraged to read longer.

Our parent/teacher conferences held in February were indeed a great success. We had well over 84% of parents represented. Parental support is critical to the success of all New Beginnings Academy students. I highly encourage you to remain involved in your child/children education. Much of the literature points to a direct correlation between children success in school and parental involvement.

The Magic of Science

New Beginnings Academy is proud to announce our participation in the 5th Annual Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad (WESO) tournament which will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2007 at Forsythe Middle School (1655 Newport Road, Ann Arbor) and Wines Elementary School in Ann Arbor.

Science Olympiad was created in 1983 by Dr. Gerard J. Putz and Jack Cairns to increase interest in science and as an alternative to traditional science fairs and single-discipline tournaments. After a series of trials, Olympiads were held in the states of Michigan and Delaware. The Science Olympiad began to grow and now the Olympiad has members in all 50 states, totaling more than 13,500 actively participating K-12 schools. The Science Olympiad is devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We hope you will consider being a volunteer coach in this outstanding opportunity. Coaching will begin March 26th until May 4th. Coaching will take place after school, based on coaches’ availability. You will find that it energizes you as well as the students. For more information, please contact Dr. Millette at 481-9001 or visit http://www.aaps.k12.mi.us/wesowizards.home to get a full listing of all activities at Science Olympiad.

Open Enrollment

Re-enrollment forms were due February 9, 2007. Open enrollment period for new students extends to March 23rd. If you have not submitted a re-enrollment form for your child as of yet, please do so ASAP. Space is limited and will not be guaranteed for anyone missing deadlines. We are excited about the many wonderful teaching and learning opportunities taking place at New Beginnings Academy. The 2007-2008 academic year is shaping up to be our most successful yet. We will soon have new promotional flyers available for distribution to interested families. If you know of any family who can benefit from the educational experience we provide at New Beginnings Academy, please stop by the office and pick up a flyer and application to share with them. Your kind gesture will be greatly appreciated.

NAAPID Program Draws Parents

The NAAPID (National African-American Parent Involvement Day) drew over 40 parents who visited classrooms and attended a presentation after the visitations. Mr. Akili Jackson, was the guest speaker and shared some great thoughts about the importance of parental involvement in their children education.  Refreshments were provided by many staff members.  Thank you to all who attended.

Virtue of the Month COURAGE

Each month we focus on a different virtue. For March, the virtue is courage. Teachers do special activities focusing on this virtue, and we recognize students who are demonstrating this virtue in a special way. Please help us in promoting this activity by discussing with your children examples of courage that you know or read about.  Many of the people students have chosen for Hero of the Week have displayed courage.

School Cancellations

If we have to cancel school because of weather, or any other reason, it will be announced on the following stations:

WJR RADIO (760 AM)

WEMU RADIO (89.1 FM)

FOX TV (CHANNEL 2)

WXYZ-ABC TV (CHANNEL 7)

The announcement will be for NEW BEGINNINGS ACADEMY.

If we have to cancel school after the students arrive, we will attempt to contact the parents by phone as well as announcing it over the radio and TV. Please keep your child’s emergency information card up-to-date with phone numbers.

ATTENDANCE AWARDS

Awards will be given each month to students who have perfect attendance.  To earn such an award, the student must:

  • Not miss any school for any reason that month (not even a half day).

  • Not be tardy more than three (3) times for the entire trimester.  If a student is tardy more than three times in one trimester, he/she cannot earn a perfect attendance award for any month in that trimester.
