New Beginnings Academy
May 2007

From the Director’s Desk
Dr. Wayne R. Millette

The week of May 7 is Teacher Appreciation Week. This is a time to reflect and praise the great job our teachers have been doing all year long. It is certainly a week to highlight the positive impact that the staff at New Beginnings Academy is having on your children.

I encourage you to take a moment and thank the staff members who are working hard for your children. Your thoughtful encouragement will be greatly appreciated.

The Ann Arbor News ran a featured article on the Science Olympiad program at New Beginnings Academy on Monday April 23, 2007. Many of our students were photographed and quoted throughout the article. The article will soon be framed and hung in the entrance of the school.

The Center for Charter Schools at Central Michigan University ran a featured story in their spring issue (May 2007) on the reading and writing programs at New Beginnings Academy. We are indeed, very grateful for the state wide exposure on our school.  Our students have been doing a great job all year long with reading at home and writing in class. Please find a copy of the article enclosed…miss quotes and all.

FACT FAMILY SCIENCE FAIR

The 2007 Science Fair will take place on Thursday May 3, 2007. 6:30-7:30pm. We encourage you to come out and support all the students in their effort. The students have been working very hard on their projects and are eager to have parents see them.

FACT FAMILY END OF YEAR CARNIVAL

Saturday June 2, 12 to 4pm, will mark the start of our first annual end of year carnival. A fun filled day for the entire family. The program is shaping up to be a very exciting and fun filled day. Caroline Sanders, FACT Family president and others are working hard to line up many fun and playful activities for the entire family…including a DUNK TANK! Further information will be coming home in the next few weeks. SAVE THE DATE

Parent volunteers will be needed to make this event run smoothly. Please look out for opportunities to volunteer in the near future. Parents will be asked to sign up for 2 half hour slots the day of the event. Volunteer forms and information are attached.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES

Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for Thursday May 24, 6:00 to 8:00pm, and all day Friday May 25, 8:00am to 4:00pm. Teachers make themselves available at your convenience, so please make an appointment with your child’s teacher. Thank you for taking the time to work with us to help your child.

VIRTUE OF THE MONTH – ENTHUSIASM

Each month we focus on a different virtue. For May, the virtue is enthusiasm. Teachers do special activities focusing on this virtue, and we recognize students who are demonstrating this virtue in a special way. You can help by reminding your child of the importance of enthusiasm for whatever positive goals they set.

Music is Fundamental

Music is apart of our everyday lives. It is important that children realize this. In addition, it is also essential that children recognize that there is much more wonderful music than just what they hear on the radio.

On Tuesday, May 8, community musicians will be presenting two assemblies. K-1 classes will attend the Music for Life assembly. They will explore music fundamentals. 2-5 classes will attend the Introduction to Genres assembly. These students will explore genres through real life context.

TESTING IN PROGRESS

All students in grades one through five will be tested starting the first week of May. Grades one and two take the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and grades three through five take the Performance Series assessments. In order to help your children do their best work, please make sure they get plenty of rest and eat a full breakfast prior to coming to school.

GRANDPARENT PROGRAM

New Beginnings Academy has been fortunate to be a participant in the Washtenaw County Foster Grandparent Program. Grandma Cleo Taylor has been faithfully and quietly assisting several of our students in their classrooms. We appreciate her dedication and support of our students. THANK YOU Grandma Cleo.
